Dat A.S.S. Report 2/23/17: The Batman, Nightwing, Kevin Smith, South Park, Suicide Squad Sequel
As reported recently, Ben Affleck stepped down from directing The Batman but now even more news regarding it has come out. The script will undergo a rewrite once a new director. It's not certain if it will be a page-one rewrite (this means the entire current script will be scrapped) or if it'll just be a simple rewrite of Affleck and Geoff John's script to fine tune it and meet the director's vision. Forbes reported that if everything goes smoothly, the movie will likely be released in 2019.
It was also reported that director Matt Reeves was in talks to direct the film, but then it was quickly announced that talks had fallen through. However on February 23rd, it was officially confirmed Reeves will in fact direct and produce the movie. This is great news as Matt Reeves is a solid director who is capable of handling both story/characters and action.
Although with what's been happening behind the scenes of the DCEU over the last few years I won't hold my breath that he will remain director until the movie premieres.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that DC and Warner Bros. are planning a Nightwing movie. Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay is in negotiations to direct the new film, and Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) will write the script. This is pretty cool as we have yet to have a Nightwing led movie in a live-action movie, though he did just appear in the aforementioned Lego Batman Movie.
Nightwing is the name Dick Grayson, the original Robin, took on when he moved on from being Batman's sidekick. Grayson was a founding member and leader of the Teen Titans, has been a member of the Outsiders, and is currently a member of the Justice League of America.
Kevin Smith posted on Instagram that Clerks 3 and Mallrats 2 are no longer happening due to one of the four leads in Clerks 3 dropping out and the idea for Mallrats 2 being changed from a movie to a series which was rejected by six networks. Instead Smith announced on Instagram that he will be doing a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back currently titled Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. The reboot will be about Jay and Silent Bob needing to go back to Hollywood to stop a new reboot of the "Bluntman & Chronic Movie". According to Smith "It's a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business's recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces." Smith also said that Miramax wants to do it and he hopes to start shooting in the summer.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole delayed until sometime before April 2018
Another day, another delay. This time it's the new South Park game which has been delayed once again, this time with no specific date or even quarter of the year set. Ubisoft just says that it'll be released sometime by April 2018 to fit into their next fiscal year April 2017-March 2018. This is really disappointing. Pretty much everyone, including Connor and I, who played the last South Park game The Stick of Truth (which suffered multiple delays too) have been watering at the mouth to play this game since it was announced last summer. Hopefully it comes out sooner rather than later.
Mel Gibson directing Suicide Squad sequel?
Controversial and Academy Award-winning director/actor Mel Gibson is reportedly in talks to direct Suicide Squad 2 for DC. Gibson said in an interview the other day that talks were still on the "first date" phase, so nothing substantial yet.
Gibson is an interesting choice to direct the movie. He certainly has directing chops, especially in terms of action. He won multiple Oscars for his work on Braveheart and is nominated this year for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge .
This of course has been met with substantial criticism given his major controversies which I won't go into since it is common knowledge and has been frequently talked about this awards season.
