The Invitation is a horror/thriller about a man that accepts an invitation to a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife and her new husband, an unsettling affair that reopens old wounds and creates new tensions with potentially sinister repercussions.
Director Karyn Kusama uses the plot to create a movie whose true horror is the way it intensely builds tension right from the beginning of the movie until it hits you with a chilling ending. The Invitation is a slow burn that gradually increases the heat with each scene. Throughout the movie we get flashbacks of what led to Will and Eden’s marriage ending and their continuing personal struggles. The real standout is Logan Marshall-Green as Will.
Kusama uses the characters to explore ideas about grief, depression, and how we cope with life-changing events. The Invitation blurs layers of mounting paranoia, mystery, and horror until both Will-and the audience-are unsure what threats are real or imagined.
The Invitation is a well made, well shot, well acted thriller that’ll keep you on edge the entire time.
The Invitation is available on Netflix.
