Sometimes you have to be completely honest with yourself. I absolutely love bad slasher movies. Not the boring slashers like the horrendous PG-13 Prom Night remake that came out in 2008. I’m talking about balls-to-the-wall, hard R, low budget, exploitation slashers. They try nothing but entertain you with sleaziness and gore. I’m a sucker for those type of films. I can’t explain why I can enjoy critical darlings like The Phantom Thread, White Heat, or Lawrence of Arabia. As well as enjoy movies like Friday the 13th: Part 1 all the way to Jason X. What I can explain to you is how awesome of a movie Pieces is.
Pieces is a movie about a killer with a chainsaw who butchers naked college students. That’s the entire plot. Yeah there’s some backstory, but who gives a shirt? It’s got some damn good gore, with a lot of nudity. What also makes this movie great is how inconsistent the environment is. The movie was directed by Juan Piquer Simon, a Spanish director who has never been to the United States (at least before the release of this movie). But the movie is set in Boston, which means it looks nothing like Boston. All the actors whether they are American or not are dubbed over too. It’s just a beautiful mess.
This movie has it all. Decapitations, limb dismemberment, and head stabbings are just to name some things off the top of my head. This is a movie that the general public would normally hate, but it has such a great exploitation charm to it that hardcore horror fanatics will love it. It’s amazing how bad the acting is, but how serious the film takes itself. This movie has a small but strong cult following to it, that I can only recommend it to horror fans that would be compared to Jamie Kennedy’s character in Scream.
If you are interested in it, be sure to watch it Joe Bob Briggs’s commentary on SHUDDER. He cuts in every 20 min or so and gives a detailed history on the people involved with the movie, especially the kung fu character that’s a hilarious stereotype. If you end up hating the movie, don’t say I didn’t warn you. For those of you true fanatics out there I hope you enjoy it.
