Game Night Review

Game Night was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and written by Mark Perez.

Not going to lie, this movie was much better than I expected. I didn’t think the movie was going to be bad or anything, but the trailers made it seem like it was going to be just a decent comedy. It instead ended up being a very funny comedy with some surprisingly good action elements to it. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been involved on back to back good to great movies (they wrote the fantastic Spider-Man: Homecoming and now directed this of course) the disastrous Vacation reboot which they wrote.

The biggest strength of the movie was the cast led by Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams with Billy Magnussen, Sharon Horgan, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, Kyle Chandler, and Jesse Plemons rounding out the supporting cast. There’s also some solid cameos but I won’t spoil them.

Is there anyone that’s been doing as good a job at playing a creep lately as Jesse Plemons? Because his character was definitely my favorite of the movie.

I don’t really have any complaints about the movie, so I’ll just go into what I liked.

⁃ The cast was excellent and so were the cameos

     ⁃ Good pacing

⁃ Very funny (especially the opening montage)

⁃ Good chase and action scenes

     ⁃ Strong emotional beats

⁃ The “b” and “c” stories were well done

⁃ Good camera work, especially with the use of tilt shift for some of the transitions

⁃ Good job at subverting some of your expectations

I definitely recommend trying to catch the movie while it’s still in theaters.
