Jessica Jones Season 2 Spoiler Free Review

As the title says, this is going to be a spoiler free review of the newest season of Jessica Jones. Let me start by saying if you haven’t watched it yet you should get on it right now.

This season was a slower burn than the first which isn’t a bad thing, and it fits the pacing of a serious investigation that a private eye or law enforcement would experience. The show doesn’t suffer from this pacing, in fact it uses it to its benefit. The initial slow burn allowed the writers to further develop Jessica, Trish, Malcolm, and Jeri Hogarth while introducing new characters as well as setting up the main plot plus the side plots.

Jessica’s arc was of course well done and I think that Trish and Hogarth had the best side plots and arguably even the best character development of the season. The writers did a deep exploration of Jessica and Trish’s relationship past and present that I thought was really well done, especially how it’s affected Trish as a person and how it drove Trish’s arc for the season. Rachael Taylor did a fantastic job this season. I really liked how they gave an increased focus to Hogarth this season and how they showed a very vulnerable side of her that I didn’t expect to see. Carrie-Anne Moss did an excellent job portraying this new side of Hogarth.

Other good things about the season:

  • Strong performances from guests and side characters
  • Some good twists and fake outs
  • Good use of flashbacks
  • Solid guest stars, especially in the later episodes
  • Some deep dives into the comics especially for one character I never expected on screen
  • The last second reveal of something to come for Trish

Some negatives:

  • Simpson’s arc
  • A few instances of sloppy effects
  • A couple of things dragged on too long

Overall it was a really good season even though it’s not as good as the first. But it’s hard to repeat that season with the incredible performance David Tennant gave as Killgrave and of course Luke Cage being in several episodes. By the way, it still pisses me off that Tennant and Krysten Ritter weren’t nominated for Emmy’s last season and it’ll piss me off if Krysten Ritter isn’t nominated for her performance this season because she was absolutely fantastic again.

I highly recommend Jessica Jones especially because you don’t even have to be a comic book reader or typically into superhero stuff to enjoy both seasons.

Let me know what you guys thought of this season!
